Responsibilities:
- Serve as a statutory Board-level Director in accordance with NAICOM requirements and the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the company’s overall corporate strategy and annual business plan.
- Provide expert technical guidance to the Board and Board subcommittees on underwriting philosophy, claims reserving, and risk appetite.
- Represent the company at industry forums, NAICOM engagements, the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), and other regulatory/professional bodies.
- Set and enforce the company’s underwriting guidelines, risk acceptance criteria, and pricing frameworks across all lines of business (life, non-life, oil & gas, marine, aviation, etc.).
- Oversee portfolio management to ensure a balanced and profitable risk mix aligned with the company’s risk appetite.
- Drive product development and review to maintain competitiveness and meet evolving market demands.
- Ensure adequate treaty and facultative reinsurance arrangements to protect the company’s net retention.
- Provide executive oversight of the end-to-end claims management process to ensure prompt, fair, and cost effective claim settlements.
- Establish claims handling policies, authority limits, and escalation protocols in compliance with NAICOM guidelines.
- Work closely with the Appointed Actuary and Finance team on pricing, reserving and solvency matters.
- Ensure the technical account (premiums, claims, reinsurance, commissions) contributes positively to the company’s profitability.
- Monitor combined ratios, loss ratios, and expense ratios, reporting deviations with remediation plans to the CEO and Board.
- Ensure full compliance with the Insurance Act 2003 (and any amendments), NAICOM guidelines, circulars, and market conduct regulations.
- Liaise with NAICOM on technical matters, regulatory submissions, and market development initiatives.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and development to the technical team, building a high-performance culture.
- Drive talent acquisition and succession planning for critical technical roles.
- Set KPIs for the technical division and conduct periodic performance reviews.
Requirements:
- HND or Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, Law, or a related discipline.
- A postgraduate degree (MBA, MSc Finance, MSc Risk Management) is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 15 years’ progressive experience in the Nigerian or African insurance industry, with at least 10 years in senior technical management.
- Professional qualification is mandatory: Associate or Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) or equivalent (ACII, FCII — UK; CPCU — USA).
- Demonstrable expertise in underwriting, claims management, and reinsurance across multiple lines of business.
- Prior experience at General Manager, Deputy Executive Director, or equivalent level is required.
- Track record of leading technical departments and delivering profitable underwriting results.
- Strong working knowledge of NAICOM regulations, the Insurance Act, and the Nigerian insurance market landscape.
